The Oregon Zoo contains more than 1,000 animals representing over 200 species ranging from enormous elephants to tiny blue poison dart frogs. Critters are maintained within natural-styled habitats organized by animal kingdom or continent of origin, including a sizable Great Northwest area, focusing on local animals such as the black bear, eagle and sea lion. Children can play on the carved creatures of the sculpture garden and families can relax and see animals from the miniature train, which loops around the zoo during the spring and fall. One of the many attractions contained within Washington Park, located just west of downtown, other nearby features include the Portland Japanese Garden and the International Rose Test Garden.
